In barrel racing, the contestant enters the arena on a sprinting American Quarter Horse. The racer rides a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels positioned in the arena before sprinting back out of the arena. The pattern can be started either from the left or right, and contestants that go off the prescribed course are disqualified. The contestant can touch or even move the barrels, but a 5 second penalty is assessed for knocking over a barrel. With the difference between a victory and a lose being measured in hundredths of a second, the rider's skill and the horse's speed and agility are put to the test.
